Bangladesh thrash Windies in 1st ODI

Bangladesh comfortably chased down 199 to win the first of their five-ODI series with the West Indies by seven wickets on Friday.

After dismissing the visitors for just 199, Bangladesh cruised to their victory target with 58 balls to spare.

Spin sensation Sohag Gazi was the standout bowler for the hosts with 4-29, including the wicket of Chris Gayle, who departed for 35.

Openers Tamim Iqbal (58) and Anamul Haque (41) set the tone with a stand of 88 for the first wicket, with Naeem Islam then making exactly 50 not out as the hosts cantered to an easy win.

Windies skipper Darren Sammy won the toss and opted to bat first, but there were no immediate fireworks from flamboyant opener Chris Gayle, with just three runs in the first three overs.

Mortaza removed Simmons for 13 in the first over after the powerplay and Sohag Gazi followed with the prize scalp of Gayle (35 from 40 balls) with only his second ball in ODIs.

Gazi sent Marlon Samuels packing for a duck, but Darren Bravo set about rebuilding the innings as he took 16 off Naeem's only over.

Kieron Pollard (15), Devon Thomas (16), Sammy (10) and Andre Russell (nought) all failed to make significant scores, while Bravo's entertaining knock ended on 35.

That left the score at 133 for eight but Narine, with 36 in 45 deliveries, and Rampaul made a major contribution at the back end of the innings.

New Zealand clinch win over Sri Lanka

Black caps have claimed their first test victory in more than 10 months, with a 167-run win over Sri Lanka in Colombo.

The tourists entered the final day needing just six wickets to win, but were made to work hard for the victory by Angelo Mathews and a defiant Sri Lankan batting line-up.

Mathews was unbeaten on one overnight and added a further 83 on Thursday before being the last man out for a well compiled 84.

That brought the Sri Lankan innings to a close at 195 and left them some 168 runs short of their unlikely victory target of 363.

The triumph was New Zealand's first since they demolished Zimbabwe by an innings and 301 runs in Napier in January and their first on Sri Lankan soil since 1998.

It also levels the two-Test series at one win apiece.

Boult was the best of the New Zealand bowlers, with his effort of 3-33 from 17.5 overs giving him seven scalps for the match, while Boult (3-58 from 20) picked up eight wickets in total.
