Clarke says all the honours go to India and he singled out rival captain MS Dhoni for his outstanding 224 in the first innings, the highest score by an India Test captain.
"Dhoni was outstanding," Clarke said.
"I certainly think that innings changed the game from our perspective."
Clarke says Australia has already turned its attention to the second Test in Hyderabad beginning on Saturday.
Dhoni says scoring his double century in Chennai made it extra special.
Dhoni says he went out to the crease with an attacking strategy aimed at putting pressure on the Australian fielders.
"It was important to play some shots so Australia had to spread the field a bit," he said.
The bowling honours went to Indian right-arm off spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who collected 12 wickets for the match.
