India defeat West Indies by innings and 51 runs in 1st Test

November 8 2013: India thrashed West Indies by an innings and 51 runs in the first cricket Test to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series at Eden Gardens.

Earlier, India strengthened their position after taking a huge 219-run first innings lead, riding on Rohit Sharma and R Ashwin’s big centuries, on the third day of the opening Test in Kolkata.

West Indies collapsed from 101 for 1 to 168 to plummet to a heavy defeat inside three days. Shami took nine wickets in the game, the most by an India fast bowler on debut. Six of them were bowled, all with the old ball.

Presentation Ceremony

Sachin Tendulkar is being felicitated with a shawl and being presented with some mementos by the chief minister of West Bengal.

Indian Captain MS Dhoni said "This was a fantastic performance. I felt the 2nd day was the worst day to bat. As it went on, despite a few spots, it was easy to bat on as the ball came on slower."

"Shami bowled in great lengths and lines. He has very good seam positioning. That's the reason he got 9 wickets. He's able to swing it both ways."

"Rohit was set to make his debut long before but he injured his ankle at Nagpur and missed out. He is enjoying his cricket now and is taking a lot more responsibility. If your 8, 9 and 10 can contribute, it helps a lot."

"Ashwin can bat like a batsman. He batted very well with Rohit. He bowled beautifully too and it helps others as well if you are not giving away runs."

West Indies captain Darren Sammy said "'We keep singing the same song. We keep getting ourselves in good positions in Test matches but we give it away. Even when India was batting, we were in a good position for a while. Getting bowled out in less than 60 overs is never any good for a Test side."

"One of our goals is to bat long and last beyond the 2nd new ball. Shillingford bowled very well. He's able to bowl long spells. We have to improve, myself included. We thought two spinners was the way to go here. We will look at it and come up with the best combination for Mumbai."

Rohit Sharma is the Man of the Match for his brilliant 177.

Rohit Sharma Said "It was really worth it. It can't get better than this. It is such a memorable Test and we are really proud. We (Ashwin and himself) wanted to bat till we get enough lead."

"We just wanted to stick in and capitalise on the loose balls. We ran very well and rotated the strike regularly. I mentioned that today morning was going to be important. We wanted to take enough lead and put them under pressure. That's exactly what happened. The bowlers did a fantastic job. I really love the Eden Gardens. The crowd is always fantastic and I'm going to take back something special today."
